<1> Activity

  1. Research works

1.1. Team research works (government research projects)

  (1)Completed Project:
  1) Title: Programs Development and System Improvement for Enhancement of Capacity Building for
  Women in S&T
2) Period: March 2008 ? November 2008
3) Main Theme:
  - Survey on research environment of women in S&T
  - Developing efficient educational training and enhancing of capacity for women scientists and
   engineers
4) Results:
  - Use of the results from the surveys (about research and educational problems) conducted on
various faculty groups and graduate students in S&T
Conducted an informal discussion on March 28, 2008 to reconfirm how influential women faculty
members are on decision making. We recognized the need for more women faculty members and
planned to explore some possible solutions on the issue of men’s and women’s equality. We
also decided at the discussion to conduct a survey dealing with the present condition of the
child-care center operated by the university. We will also propose suggestions for improvement
  to the main administration.

- Developing leadership (through meetings) among women faculty members in S&T
The first meeting with S&T women leaders took place on March 19, 2008. A lecture was given on
  the notion of traditional knowledge.
The second meeting with S&T women leaders took place on June 4, 2008. Research conducted
by women professors and the ability of the administration to support this research were discussed.
The meeting with women leaders on politics took place on September 17, 2008. Strategies on
widening women’s leadership in S&T were discussed.
The meeting with women leaders from various economic fields took place on November 5, 2008.
Ways to integrate and harmonize the College of Oriental Medicine and IT technology were discussed.

- Revitalization of the community of women faculty
The first informal consultation with women professors in S&T took place on June 4, 2008.
Mentoring programs and how they will operate and the budget for this project were discussed.
A social gathering of Kyung Hee University women professors took place on September 26, 2008.
Welfare facilities for women in S&T such as a childcare center were discussed. Also, an agreement was reached to request the university to improve the research environment.
The second informal consultation with women professors in S&T took place on October 9, 2008.
An official proposal for welfare facility members in S&T was devised and submitted to the university. The mentoring program was launched and professors were encouraged to participate as mentors at WISE (Women into Science and ngineering)
The senior women professors meeting took place on November 28, 2008. Discussed were ways
to create networking between elder and young professors. This etworking is to be used for collaborative research activities and career development of women in S&T.

  (2) Working on Project
  1) Title: Development of Acupuncture Treatment for Patients with Parkinson's disease
2) Period: September 2008 ? June 2009
3) Main Theme:
  - Default  -mode network searching of the Parkinson’s disease group treated by medication
  - Prove the change of Parkinson’s disease default  -mode network by acupuncture

  2. Study on the standardization of acupoints

(1) Responsible person: Prof. Sabina Lim (Chief, Division of Acupuncture & Meridian)

(2) Description of the study:
  - Study on STRASA (Standards for Reporting in Animal Study of Acupuncture)

(3) Process of the study:
  - All the surveyed papers (100%) provided specific descriptions of the animal models used in the
experiments for the Experimental Animal items. Among them, a total of 39 papers (88.4%) were
referenced to establish a pathologic model and the remaining 5 yielded a non-pathologic model.
In Details of Animals, all the papers (100%) either identified the animal species or sex. While 40
papers (93%) mentioned both items, only 3 mentioned the animal species. And 38 papers (88.4%)
mentioned the environment of the experiment, while 7 did not mention this environment..

  - As for the Type of Acupuncture items, 34 papers (79.1%) provided specific descriptions about the
type of acupuncture used while 9 didn't. While 27 papers (62.8%) specifically mentioned the
   rationale for treatment, 17 didn't.

  - As for the List of Point items, all the papers (100%) mentioned the names of points with 39
(90.7%) providing the accurate symbols and traditional titles in Tsusanli and Choksamni. While 30
papers (69.7%) mentioned literature review to justify their rationale, 13 didn't. While 37 papers
(86.0%) mentioned the locations of points, 6 provided no such descriptions.

  - As for the Needle Stimulation items, 24 papers (58.5% of 41 papers excluding the ones using
moxibustion) mentioned the depth of insertion, but 19 didn't (two of 17 papers referencing
moxibustion are excluded). While 31 papers (86.1% of 36 papers excluding the ones using
apipuncture) mentioned the needle stimulation techniques, 12 (5 of 7 using apipuncture are
excluded) didn't. While 33 papers (97.1% of 34 papers excluding the ones using apipuncture)
mentioned the needle retention time, 10 (1 out of 9 using apipuncture and moxibustion is
excluded) didn't. While 30 papers (69.7%) mentioned the specification of needles, 13 didn't. And 5
papers (13.5% of 37 papers excluded the ones using apipuncture and moxibustion) mentioned the
responses elicited, 38 (9 out of 29 papers using apipuncture and moxibustion are excluded)
   didn't.

  - As for the Treatment Regimen items, 18 papers (41.9%) presented specific description about the
number of treatment sessions, and 17 papers (39.5%) about the frequency of treatment.

  - As for the co-intervention items, there was no paper that discussed treatments other than
   acupuncture, apipuncture, and moxibustion.

  - As for the Practitioner Background items, only one paper provided specific descriptions because
the author had commissioned the acupuncture treatment to an acupuncturist.

  - And as for the Control Intervention(s) items, 25 papers (58.1%) specifically mentioned the active
comparison points, and 39 (90.7%) conducted control stimulation along with the details of control
intervention. Among the papers that depicted the active comparison points, 9 (20.9% of the total)
used different blood spots describing the sources that justified the choice of control.

(4) Result of the study
  - If the STRASA (Standards for Reporting in Animal Study of Acupuncture) is suggested and
actively used by researchers of acupuncture tests on animals, they will help increase the
reliability and reproducibility of acupuncture tests on animals and to accumulate related
information, contributing to the growth of acupuncture and clinical acupuncture.

  3. Activity for development of the policy on traditional medicine to government

  (1) Responsible personnel:
  - Director Ki-ho Cho and all researchers involved in East-West Medical Research Institute

(2) Description of the activity:
  - A Study on the Status Quo of Oriental Herbal Medicine; Formulas by Oriental Medical Hospitals
for the Improvement of Oriental Medicine Insurance

(3) Objective of the activity:
  - The study aimed to provide basic data for future policies regarding the expansion of health
insurance coverage through investigating the current status of Oriental herbal medicine insurance
as perceived by the Korean Medical Doctors (KMD) and the public.

(4) Result of the activity:
  - In-depth interviews with KMD suggested that current Oriental herbal medical insurance coverage
is limited. The current insurance coverage is so minimal that even the most commonly used
prescriptions are not reimbursed. Most Oriental herbal medicine formulas are not covered by
insurance. Formulas that are not covered by Oriental herbal medicine insurance are prescribed
more frequently than formulas that are covered. Out of the prescribed formulas that are not
covered, decoctions were the most prescribed. Although decoctions made by KMD in the clinics
are the most effective, their high production costs led many KMD to argue that complex soluble
granules should come first when the government changes its oriental herbal medical insurance
policies. On average, KMD uses 13 medicinal herbs to formulate decoction prescriptions. The
current practice is to prescribe 20 packs for both initial and follow up prescriptions. However, if
new health insurance coverage is put into practice, the number of packs per prescription is
expected to change. In conclusion, this survey suggests that future improvement requires the
   incorporation of complex soluble granules.
