Geriatrics and gerontology

The ratio of seniors to entire population has been increasing so rapidly in Korea since 1980s - the ratio was 10.3% in 2008 and is expected to reach 20% in 2026. Therefore, increase in chronic degenerative disease is a big issue, but limitations of western medicine in elderly disease have agitated the multidisciplinary research - especially th cooperation of western and oriental medicine. In oriental medicine, the regimen for healthy body has been recorded in document from ancient times, thus it can be used to help care and prevent various chronic elderly diseases.



Research initiatives comprising of three major areas:

1.elucidation and control of the aging mechanisms ;
2.investigation of geriatric diseases including Alzheimer disease, cerebrovascular disease, degenerative
joint disease, and development of treatment and prevention programs for these diseases;
3.psychological, problems of the elderly; as well as improvement of the QOL of the elderly
